| Text | Online lecture notes to be posted below. Published books that you may also find useful, particularly if you don't have any real familiarity with p-adics before, are by Gouvea, Koblitz, and Robert. The books by Gouvea and Koblitz have partial solutions to exercises in the back. Those with a good background in commutative algebra should consider the book by Serre. | ||
9/5: An example of some recent board work.
8/29: Semester starts.
Brief course description: This course is an introduction to local fields, such as the p-adic numbers and their finite extensions. These fields play a prominent role in many parts of number theory and representation theory.
Prerequisites: Math 5211. Concepts from Math 5110 will also figure prominently.
Projects: There will be a project due near the
end of the semester. A list of topics will be
posted a few weeks into the course.
